FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What is the Homes Not Stadiums ballot initiative?
Answer:
This initiative would prohibit the construction of a professional sports stadium on the RFK site in Washington, DC. It prioritizes building affordable housing, community-serving businesses, schools, green space, and cultural institutions instead.  You can read the legislative text here.

Why oppose a new stadium?
Answer:
DC taxpayers have already paid for (and are still paying off!) multiple stadiums. Billionaire team owners don’t need more public subsidies. What DC urgently needs is affordable housing — not more luxury developments that displace long-time residents and drive up rents.

What will the ballot initiative actually do?
Answer:
If passed, the initiative will create a new zoning law that designates the RFK site as a “special purpose zone” that is zoned to not permit a stadium to be built.

Why go after zoning instead of funding?
Answer:
Ballot initiatives in DC do not allow citizens to direct how money is spent. Therefore we cannot have a ballot initiative that says we want taxpayer dollars spent only on affordable housing. Instead we crafted a ballot initiative that goes after what can be allowed to be built on the RFK site.

Is this ballot initiative anti-sports?
Answer:
Not at all. DC loves its sports teams. This ballot initiative is about priorities: housing and community needs must come first — especially when public land and money are involved.

How does this impact the future of the RFK site?
Answer:
It clears the way for a long-overdue, community-driven redevelopment. That means new homes, job opportunities, and public amenities — not another traffic-clogging mega-project.

Who’s behind this initiative?
Answer:
DC residents who believe public land should serve the public. We’re housing advocates, community leaders, and everyday neighbors who are tired of giveaways to billionaires while people are priced out of their homes.

How can I help?
Answer:
There are many ways you can help!

  • Volunteer: Talk to your neighbors, help us put up posters around town, and help the campaign get on the ballot by gathering signatures from DC voters. Click here to get involved.
  • Donate: We are up against a multi-billion dollar industry, so please contribute!
  • Spread the word: Share our message on social media and in your community.

Why aren’t you on X, Instagram, or Facebook?
Answer:
Those social media platforms are a different playground for billionaires. While they don’t directly take taxpayer dollars away from affordable housing, we can’t, in good faith, choose one billionaire playground over another. You can find us on BlueSky.

What’s the timeline for the ballot initiative?
Answer:
The current timeline is:

  • Wednesday, July 2, 2025: The DC Board of Elections will hold a public hearing on the subject matter of the ballot initiative.
  • Fall 2025: Ballot access phase begins. We’ll need to collect upwards of 35,000 signatures from DC voters to get on the ballot.
  • February 2026: Deadline to submit ballot access petitions qualify for the June primary ballot.
  • June 2026: DC voters decide.
